Description:
St. George is depicted as an equestrian saint on horseback, with the dragon below him, which the saint thrusts a lance into his throat.
According to legend, St. George liberated a Libyan city from a monster in the form of a dragon to which the inhabitants sacrificed their children as a deity.
The saint died a martyr’s death in 303 under Emperor Diocletian.
Legend has it that Saint George appeared in a country that was terrorized by a dragon that the inhabitants worshipped as a deity.
This dragon regularly demanded human sacrifices, and when it was the king’s daughter’s turn to be sacrificed, St. George appeared to save her.
He defeated the dragon and killed it with his lance, saving the city and the princess.
Out of gratitude, the inhabitants of the town converted to Christianity.
This depiction is very popular in many cultures and churches and can be found in works of art, statues, icons and even in national coats of arms, such as the coat of arms of England and Russia, where St. George is venerated as the patron saint.
