St. George is one of the best-known and most revered figures in the legends of the Christian saints. As the patron saint of many countries and cities, including England, Georgia and Portugal, as well as numerous professional groups such as soldiers and farmers, his influence can be felt worldwide.
The legend of St. George, which was widespread in the Middle Ages, depicts him as a brave knight who defeated a dragon to save a princess and a city. This story symbolizes the victory of good over evil and became a central motif in Christian iconography. The equestrian saint is typically depicted in armour, riding a horse and holding a lance with which he pierces the dragon.

Historically, George was a Roman soldier who was born around the year 300 in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey). He joined the army of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, but was also a devout Christian. When Diocletian ordered the persecution of Christians, George refused to renounce his faith and was therefore tortured and executed. This act made him a martyr and soon afterwards a saint of the Church.
The cult of St. George spread quickly, especially in the Middle Ages, when he became one of the fourteen emergency helpers. In art and literature, it is often portrayed as a symbol of courage, faith and protection from danger. His feast day, April 23, is celebrated in many countries with processions, church services and other festivities.
St. George remains a symbolic figure deeply rooted in Christian tradition, and his legend continues to inspire people around the world.
