Flemish painting is one of the most important art movements in European art history and has its origins in the region of Flanders, which is now part of Belgium. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Flemish masters developed an unmistakable style characterized by precise attention to detail, exceptional use of colour and unique lighting. A central motif in Flemish painting was the depiction of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus – a theme that symbolized both religious devotion and artistic skill.

The depiction of Madonnas with children was a popular subject for Flemish painters. These works reflected the spiritual significance and deep-rooted Christian tradition that characterized the lives of people in the 16. and 17th century. Masters such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden created paintings that impressively depicted Mary’s gentleness and maternal care, highlighting the connection between mother and child. These works conveyed comfort and hope and often functioned as personal devotional images.
The use of light also played an important role. The incident light, which often fell on Mary’s face or the infant Jesus, symbolized divine grace and illustrated the closeness to God through their holiness.
