Description
The miraculous liberation: a sign of divine protection:
The liberation of St. Peter from prison is one of the most famous miracle stories in the New Testament and symbolizes divine protection and the power of faith. This incident is described in the Acts of the Apostles (chapter 12, verses 1-11) and shows how the apostle Peter miraculously escaped from captivity.
The story begins with King Herod Agrippa I intensifying the persecution of Christians and having the apostle Peter arrested. Peter was closely guarded, shackled with chains and locked up in a Roman prison. Meanwhile, the members of the young Christian community prayed incessantly for his release.
The night before his planned trial, an angel of the Lord appeared in the cell. The angel’s light illuminated the room and he woke Peter, loosened his shackles and led him past the guards to freedom. Peter, who initially thought he was dreaming, realized after his escape that it was an actual miracle.
St. Peter’s release from prison is often interpreted as a symbol of the believer’s liberation from the shackles of sin and worldly powers. This scene is a popular motif in Christian art and is often depicted in churches, paintings and sculptures. It illustrates faith in divine providence and the power of prayer, which can break even the strongest shackles.
The story of Peter’s miraculous deliverance continues to inspire believers today and underlines the importance of trusting in faith in difficult times.
The texts can be found in the Bible in the Acts of the Apostles verses 12,1-23
