Description
On the subject:
St. Sebastian, born in Milan, is one of the most famous martyrs of the Christian church. He grew up in a prestigious family and, thanks to his excellent education, became an officer in the bodyguard under Emperor Diocletian, one of the most powerful rulers of the Roman Empire. Despite his position at the imperial court, Sebastian openly professed his Christianity, a courageous act that carried great risk at a time of intense persecution of Christians.
When Diocletian learned of Sebastian’s faith, he condemned him to death. He was to be executed by Numidian archers who pierced him with arrows. Legend has it, however, that Sebastian survived this martyrdom through a divine miracle. Severely scarred by his wounds, he remained true to his faith and once again stood up for Christianity. This earned him a second condemnation by Diocletian, which ultimately led to his death. Sebastian was beaten to death at the Circus, but his victim did not go unnoticed. His body was recovered and buried by Christian followers. The church of “San Sebastiano fuori le mura” was built over his grave in the 4th century and is still an important pilgrimage destination today. This church is considered one of the earliest Christian places of worship in Rome and bears witness to Sebastian’s lasting influence on the faithful.
St. Sebastian:
A remarkable work of art depicting St. Sebastian is a southern German Baroque sculpture from 1730. This sculpture, carved from lime wood and painted in polychrome, embodies the artistic mastery and deep religious fervor of the time. The figure is 95.0 cm high and 45.0 cm wide, making it an imposing yet finely crafted work of art. The condition of this sculpture is remarkably well preserved, which speaks for its careful care. The vivid colors and detailed carving make it a valuable testimony to Baroque piety and artistic skill, which is still admired today, by a sculptor from Lower Bavaria.
Very good condition.
