Madonna with child:
A particularly impressive example of this motif is a sculpture made of lime wood, carved three-quarters round and showing remarkable craftsmanship. The sculpture is flattened at the back, which indicates that it was probably designed to be placed in a niche or in front of a wall. The old original version of the sculpture gives it an authentic appearance, while the sceptre and crown were probably added at a later date.
Standing on a multi-sided plinth, the sculpture presents itself in an imposing front view. Our Lady is dressed in an elegant, belted red dress, closed at the neck and wrapped in a golden mantle. The coat, which is draped far in front of her body, is characterized by artfully designed bowl pleats that lend the figure a special depth and dynamism.
Mary wears a white veil with a headband and a crown, emphasizing her role as Queen of Heaven. In her right hand she holds the naked baby Jesus, who is resting on her hip. Christ blesses the viewer with his right hand and points to his mother with his left arm, emphasizing her significance as the Mother of God. The sceptre in Mary’s left, outstretched hand symbolizes her royal dignity and her special position in the Christian faith.
This sculpture is not only an expression of deep religious reverence, but also a valuable collector’s item that impresses with its artistic quality and historical significance. Such depictions of the “Madonna and Child” have a long tradition and remain a central symbol of Christian piety and devotion to the Mother of God.
