Description

The masterpieces of Jacob de Backer: allegory and symbolism in Dutch painting

Dutch painting experienced a heyday in the 16th century, which was characterized above all by the works of talented artists such as Jacob de Backer. Jacob de Backer, a painter from Antwerp, was active between 1570 and 1600 and was one of the most important representatives of Flemish painting. His works are known for their intense coloration, the pronounced attention to detail and the refined depiction of mythological and allegorical themes.

De Backer’s works, often allegorical depictions, not only reflect the artistic trends of his time, but also the philosophical and moral considerations that were of great importance in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. His paintings are characterized by a profound symbolism that invites the viewer to think beyond the scenes depicted and grasp their deeper meaning. De Backer masterfully combined mythological motifs with realistic portraits, which lent his works a special expressive power.

To the painting:

An impressive example of his art is the oil painting on a wooden panel which depicts an allegory with Juno and Saturn and comes from the workshop of Jacob de Backer.

The painting measures 66.2 cm in length and 49.5 cm in width without the frame and impresses with its high quality and careful execution.

In this work, the goddess Juno is shown facing the viewer in the form of Venus, while her symbol, the peacock, stands at her feet. She holds coins in her left hand and a golden cup in her right. Saturn, who can be seen on the left of the picture, shows the viewer his muscular back. In the background, King Minas rises from a river, his gilded robe lying on the bank.

The painting, which has been preserved almost in its original state, shows Jacob de Backer’s exceptional skill and illustrates his importance in 16th century Dutch painting.

Slight color variations at the joint along the two wooden panels.
