The heyday of Dutch oil painting in the 17th century: A look at floral still lifes

Dutch oil painting in the 17th century, also known as the “Golden Age of Dutch Painting “, experienced a heyday that still fascinates art lovers today. Masterpieces of outstanding detail and natural depictions were created during this period. The genre of still life painting, which was characterized by the floral motifs of the Dutch masters, was particularly popular. The Dutch artists of the 17th century combined their extraordinary technique with a deep understanding of light and shadow. Her paintings not only reflected beauty, but often also conveyed a symbolic meaning, be it the transience of life or the richness of nature.

Dutch oil painting, especially floral still lifes, were an expression of both prosperity and transience. The detailed depiction of flowers, which often could not bloom at the same time, symbolized the transience of life, while the careful composition underlined the artists’ virtuoso craftsmanship. In these paintings, artistic sophistication was combined with an interest in the natural sciences, making these works precious testimonies of their time.

Two Dutch flower still lifes:

A particularly beautiful example from the second half of the 17th century are two flower still lifes from the Netherlands that belong together.

The two paintings show lush floral arrangements on a table with tulips, roses, daffodils and a bluish funnel vine; the composition is masterfully staged against a dark background.

Both works, painted in oil on canvas, measure 22.3 cm x 26.7 cm without frame and 30.0 cm x 34.6 cm with frame.

The original ebonized profile frame in which the works are framed enhances their noble character.

Despite their age, the still lifes are in remarkably good condition. They have been carefully cleaned and varnished to preserve their vibrant colors and details.

The detailed execution and fine nuances of color make these works examples of Dutch still life art and valuable witnesses to one of the most important periods of European painting.

The two flower still lifes immerse the viewer in the world of the Dutch masters.
