Description

On the subject:

The Ascension of Christ is one of the most important events in the Christian faith and marks the moment when Jesus ascended to heaven after his resurrection. This event is often depicted in art and has inspired countless artists over the centuries. Icons that capture this sacred event are particularly impressive.

Ascension of Christ:

A remarkable icon from around 1630-50 shows the Ascension of Christ on a picture panel made from two hardwood panels. The original back ponkis and the dovetail joint bear witness to the craftsmanship of this era. The egg tempera painting on a chalk base lends the icon a luminous intensity of color and extraordinary depth.

In the lower part of the icon, the Virgin Mary is depicted frontally, her arms outstretched in blessing, conveying peace and grace. She is flanked by the archangels Michael and Gabriel and the apostles, who reverently observe the event. This arrangement symbolizes the close connection between heaven and earth, which is emphasized by the ascension of Christ.

The upper part of the icon shows Christ in a mandorla, an almond-shaped halo that symbolizes the divine. Two angels gently lift him up to heaven, while his sandals, left behind, lie on a rock beneath him. These details make it clear that Christ leaves the earthly world behind and enters the kingdom of heaven.

The icon is in a good state of preservation and is a rare collector’s item. Such depictions of the Ascension of Christ are not only of religious significance, but also a valuable testimony to the history of art and faith that captivates viewers time and again.
