Original old Dutch paintings for sale and to buy in the southern German region of Munich
The painting The Adoration of the Shepherds, attributed to Cornelis de Baellieur (1607 – 1671), is a fascinating example of Baroque art. Baellieur, a Flemish painter from Antwerp, created many biblical scenes that are known for their detailed style and emotional depth. This work, painted in oil on copper, depicts one of the most important scenes in Christian iconography: the birth of Christ, surrounded by shepherds who contemplate the newborn child in adoration.

The medium of oil on copper lends the picture a special luminosity and fine detail. The use of copper as a ground was not uncommon in the Baroque period, as it provides a smooth surface that enables fine brushstrokes and precise depiction. The painting captivates with its intense coloring, which masterfully captures the light in the scenery – a trademark of Flemish Baroque painting.
At the center of the picture is the infant Jesus, who is surrounded by Mary and Joseph. The shepherds, who are depicted as simple people, symbolize the humility and reverence with which they encounter the divine child. The scene is adorned with rich details: from the folds of the robes to the shining faces of the figures, who are moved by the presence of the Savior.

Cornelis de Baellieur was known for his small, detailed figures, which he depicted with great precision in his compositions. This work is an excellent example of his ability to depict complex scenes in a compact format while retaining the depth and drama of the action. The Adoration of the Shepherds remains an impressive testimony to Flemish art and spiritual devotion.
