Jan Mabuse Gossaert (also known asJan Gossaert ) was an influential painter of the Flemish Renaissance, whose works have had a lasting impact on the art world to this day. Gossaert was one of the first artists of his time to travel to Italy to study the classical ideals of the Renaissance and integrate them into his work. His paintings are characterized by a masterful perspective, sophisticated anatomy and subtle use of light and shadow.
One example of his school is a remarkable oil painting on oak, which was created in his workshop in the Netherlands between 1550 and 1600. The work measures 35.2 x 28.2 cm and is framed in an ebonized flambeau frame measuring 55.8 x 48.8 cm.
The depiction shows the Virgin Mary holding the naked Christ child on her knees and looking down at him with a devout gaze. The Christ Child turns towards the viewer and extends both arms towards him, an iconographic gesture of redemption and closeness. Several similar variants of this motif are known, which bear the signature of Gossaert’s workshop. This specific painting was probably created by a pupil of Gossaert in the second half of the 16th century.
The condition is very good, which makes this piece a special collector’s item. The richly detailed execution and historical significance make this work an exemplary testimony to the Flemish artistic tradition.
