Description

The healing of the blind man – a miracle of Christ in the Passion cycle: a sign of faith and renewal

The healing of the blind man is one of the five great miracles that Jesus performed and which play a central role in the Bible. Especially in the Passion cycle, this miracle symbolizes the divine power of Jesus and the transformative power of faith. The story of the healing of a man blind from birth is found in the Gospel of John (John 9:1-41) and conveys the profound message that true knowledge is only possible through faith.

In the biblical story, Jesus encounters a blind man who has been ostracized and stigmatized as a sinner because of his condition. The disciples asked whether the man’s blindness was the result of his own sin or that of his parents. Jesus replied that neither he nor his parents had sinned, but that the blind man was in this condition so that the works of God might be revealed in him. This miracle emphasizes God’s intention not to punish people, but to heal and redeem them.

Jesus healed the blind man by spitting on the ground, making a paste from the saliva and soil and spreading it on the blind man’s eyes. He then sent him to the Siloah well to wash his eyes. When the man did this, he received his sight. This healing symbolizes the transition from darkness to enlightenment, from ignorance to faith. It emphasizes the need to overcome one’s own blindness, both in the physical and spiritual sense, by trusting in Jesus.

Icon of Christ’s healing of the blind

In the center of the icon of the healing of the blind man stands Jesus, surrounded by his apostles on the left.

Jesus holds sand in his left hand and smears it with his right hand into the eyes of the blind man, who is depicted kneeling on the right side of the icon. Above you can see the blind man washing the sand out of his eyes at the Siloah fountain. The city walls of Jerusalem can be seen in the background.

The icon comes from Greece and was created around 1750-80. It is in very good condition and is a sought-after collector’s item.
