Bergmann Company – Masterful works of art from Vienna around 1900
Large Viennese bronzes for sale and purchase in Munich
The Bergmann company, a renowned manufacturer of Viennese bronzes, was one of the most important addresses for high-quality bronze sculptures in Vienna, Austria, around 1900. Founded by Franz Xaver Bergmann, the company quickly became known for its artistic and detailed miniature bronzes, which are now coveted collector’s items.
Bergmann’s bronzes were characterized by their exceptional precision craftsmanship and the vivid depiction of figures. Animal figures depicted in various poses and scenes were particularly popular. Oriental and mythological motifs, everyday scenes and erotic depictions were also part of the company’s repertoire. Each figure was painstakingly cast, chiseled and painted by hand, giving the bronzes their unique charm and high quality.

The success of the Bergmann workshop was also closely linked to the era of Viennese Art Nouveau, which was characterized by a new aesthetic and a return to artisan traditions. During this period, demand grew for decorative objects that served not only as handicrafts but also as luxurious home accessories.
The Bergmann bronzes were marked with the famous “B” in the jug, confirming the origin and authenticity of the bronzes. This signature is still an important feature that is appreciated by collectors worldwide.
Around 1900, the Bergmann company experienced its heyday, and its work was highly regarded not only in Austria but also internationally. The detailed execution and vivid colors made Bergmann’s Viennese bronzes a symbol of the craftsmanship of Viennese artisans.

Hans Deutike (born 1887 – died 1953), second generation publisher at Deutike Verlag, ordered this owl from Bergmann Wien in 1928 as a symbol of wisdom for the company’s 50th anniversary.
The model of the owl as a symbol of wisdom already existed at the Bergmann company in a different version, but here it was put together especially for Deutike Verlag with books from their own publishing house.
These are Dimmer Pillat’s Augenheilkunde, Jakob Anatomie und Histologie des Großhirns Band I and Dr. F. P. Tretwell Analytische Chemie Band I, all successful editions from Deutike Verlag.
The year 1878-1928 for the company’s 50th anniversary is engraved on a brass plate on the top book.
