Description

Weilheim sculptures:

Weilheim’s 17th-century picture carving stands for exceptional craftsmanship and artistic quality, which is known far beyond the region. During this time, the art of woodcarving in Weilheim reached its peak, characterized by a deep religious expression and fine detail work. The works of this period, often made of lime wood, are famous for their lifelike depictions and the careful elaboration of figures and ornaments. The carvers of this period created sculptures that played a central role both in churches and in private places of worship. Particularly characteristic of the Weilheim Masters is their ability to depict the holy figures in a way that captures both divine grandeur and human features.

Weilheim Madonna:

An outstanding example of this art is a sculpture from around 1630, which was created by a Weilheim master. This full-round figure, carved from lime wood and finished with a wooden surface, is a masterpiece of religious art. The sculpture shows a Madonna standing on a pedestal and depicted in a majestic pose. On her left arm she carries the Christ Child, while her right hand points to the divine Son, a symbol of mediation between heaven and earth.

The sculpture is mainly designed for the front view and is characterized by its harmonious proportions and fine detail work. Particularly noteworthy is the brown patina that adorns the surface of the lime wood and gives the artwork a warm, aged appearance. Despite its great age, the sculpture is in a very good state of preservation, which underlines its art-historical significance. The Madonna’s hands were added over time, as was the pedestal, which dates from the 19th century.

This sculpture is an impressive testimony to Weilheim’s sculpture carving and embodies the high level of craftsmanship and the deep faith that permeates the works of this era. It is not only a valuable collector’s item, but also an important object of religious art that represents the long tradition and artistic excellence of the Weilheim master carvers of the 17th century.
