Description

On the subject:

The biblical theme of “Mary’s introduction into the temple” is an important event in the Christian tradition and is celebrated as one of the great feasts in the Orthodox Church on December 4. This celebration commemorates the moment when the young Mary, at the age of three, was taken by her parents, Joachim and Anna, to the temple in Jerusalem to live there in preparation for her divine destiny.

According to tradition, Mary remained in the temple until she was 11 years old, where she spent her time reading the Holy Scriptures and praying. This event is seen as a sign of her special election and purity, as she was in the service of God from an early age and was preparing for her future role as Mother of the Redeemer.

Introduction Mary in the temple:

An impressive depiction of this event can be found in an icon made on a single softwood panel. This icon, painted in egg tempera on a gold background, shows the key scene in the central field: Joachim and Anna bring little Mary to the temple, where the high priest Zacharias receives her. Mary is followed by three virgins who accompany her on her way and symbolize her purity.

The artistic design of the icon is of particular importance. The gold background lends the work a celestial aura and emphasizes the spiritual dimension of the event depicted. The figures are detailed and worked out with great care, demonstrating the artist’s high level of craftsmanship.

The very good condition of the icon, with minimal color variations, underlines its value as a rare collector’s item. Such icons are not only an expression of deep religious devotion, but also valuable cultural artifacts that preserve the spiritual heritage and artistic tradition of the Christian world.

The Solemnity of the Presentation of Mary into the Temple is an important part of the liturgical calendar and reminds the faithful of the purity and special election of the Virgin Mary, who was chosen by God to become the mother of Jesus Christ.
