SAINT SEBASTIAN

Basswood, fully carved and polychrome painted. South German master from the baroque period around 1730.

Size: height 95.0 cm width 45.0 cm

Saint Sebastian grew up in Milan and was due to its excellent education officer of the guard under the emperor Diocletian. According to tradition, he confessed at the imperial court publicly to Christianity, after which Emperor Diocletian sentenced him to death by Numidian archers. Miraculously Survived St. Sebastian the martyrdom and pleaded again to Christianity, after which Emperor Diocletian again sentenced him to death and had slain the Circus. Christians buried the body, over his grave site, the church "San Sebastiano fuori le murra" was built in the 4th century.
