CHRIST AND THE UNBELIEVABLE THOMAS

Beech wood single panel with egg tempera painting on chalk ground.

Greece, time of origin 1720- 40, size height 26,5 cm width 18,0 cm

In the middle, Christ is represented with his hand raised, on his right the unbelieving Thomas, around them all the other apostles are gathered.

Thomas was originally a fisherman until his appointment as a disciple, the disciple gained his fame through his doubts about the resurrection of Jesus.

Only after Jesus asked him to touch his stigmata he believed the incomprehensible.

"My Lord and my God" (Gospel of St. John 20,24-29)

Thomas was therefore the first disciple who recognized the divine nature of Christ.

Very good condition.

A rare collector's item!
